Staff will retain their jobs, as they are employed by SandpiperCI, which is organising the changeover.
Reopening is due for March with the franchise confident in the future of Guernsey’s retail industry.
‘There will be a six-figure investment to change the current George store to the new brand,’ said a SandpiperCI spokesperson.
The store is at Grande Rue, St Martin’s.
‘It will have work done to it so that it looks like a Matalan store in the UK, and so it is a full investment. Sandpiper are confident in the future of retail in Guernsey.’
Eight people currently work at George.
‘Sandpiper may well employ some new people into job roles in the future depending on how well it goes.
‘Matalan is not believed to deliver to Guernsey, and so competition from online sales is not expected.’
Once transformed into Matalan, staff will continue to be employed by Sandpiper on the same contracts.
‘Because it is a franchise operation, they will simply move over.’
