No cash payments at recycling centre from next month
CASH payments will no longer be accepted at the Longue Hougue household waste and recycling centre from next month, in an effort to reduce queues.
Hundreds of vehicles visit the centre every day and there are occasional hold-ups.
From 1 February, when the site moves to electronic payments only, any charges will have to be paid using debit or credit card, or another automated transaction system, such as Apple Pay or Google Pay.
Most materials can be dropped off at Longue Hougue for free, and charges apply only to items such as mattresses, black bags, polystyrene and VHS videos.
Recycling officer Tina Norman-Ross said the site was extremely popular, with people dropping off all manner of things.
‘Longue Hougue is now a one-stop solution for households who need to dispose of anything that they no longer need: from general rubbish which they pay for, to items such as old plant pots and televisions that can be recycled and which are free to drop off.
‘That’s not forgetting items that are in good condition which can be donated to our onsite re-use partner, [the charity] Go.
‘On average, we have more than 500 vehicles visiting daily and this often leads to some fairly long queues.
‘We understand this is not ideal and so we have been looking at ways to improve the customer experience and speed things up.
‘With card transactions, receipts will be generated automatically, which is much quicker than having to deal with cash transactions and manual paperwork.’
Mrs Norman-Ross added that there would still be provision for people who genuinely do not have a bank card, and this will be at the discretion of site staff.
