Some areas of Saumarez Park closed due to flooding
HEAVY rain caused the duck pond at Saumarez Park to break its boundaries and spread across its neighbouring paths.
The pond area and adjacent path are therefore closed in the interest of public safety and islanders are encouraged to be cautious of certain areas of the park which have also been affected by the recent heavy rain.
Agriculture, Countryside & Land Management Services (ACLMS) have inspected the site and will be placing signs and tape at the affected areas to warn park users about the closure.
Principle environment services officer for ACLMS Andrew McCutcheon said people were still welcome to use unaffected areas of the park.
'But unfortunately it is necessary to close the areas which pose a risk to public safety.
'The water is muddy and discoloured and so, while the flooding on the footpath itself may only be a few inches deep in some areas, it is difficult to see the path, identify tree roots which may trip you or identify the edge of the pond itself.'
He urged people to take care around these areas, particularly if they were with children.
ACLMS intend to reopen the affected areas as soon as the flooding has cleared.
Visitors to the park are also encouraged to stick to footpaths and avoid walking on any grassed areas while it is so wet. This will help to reduce compaction of the grass, meaning it will be
able to restore itself more easily and be healthier for everyone to enjoy in the summer months.
A spokesperson for the Guernsey Met Office confirmed that 10.5mm of rain fell on Monday 1 February, and 13.7mm fell on Tuesday.
Sunshine and showers can be expected for the rest of the week, getting cooler over the weekend.
Other areas of the island were impacted by heavy rain, not just the usual suspects on the east coast, but up in St Peter's too.
As well, the golf course at L'Ancresse was flooded at the end of January.
