Active Covid cases fall to 356
GUERNSEY’S number of active Covid-19 infections has fallen to 356, with only one new community seeded case found.
Eleven fresh cases of the illness were diagnosed on Monday.
The total number of active cases fell from 366 on Sunday, after 21 people recovered. There are currently nine people in hospital, two of whom do not need clinical care.
The news comes as the UK looks to tighten its border from Monday due to concern about different variants of Covid-19 getting into the country. International arrivals from 33 red-listed countries to England will have to stay in a quarantine hotel for 10 days, at a cost of £1,750. All international arrivals to Scotland will also face managed self-isolation. Guernsey is part of the Common Travel Area, so islanders travelling to the UK for essential reasons, such as healthcare, do not need to self-isolate there.
However, the position for people travelling from red countries, through the UK, and on to Guernsey is less clear in the new regulations. There is no evidence so far of an exemption for Channel Island-bound passengers, so they may face two rounds of quarantine. Red list countries are primarily in Africa and South America.
Currently, only people granted a permit are allowed to travel to Guernsey. Most will then face two weeks of self-isolation when they arrive.
If a person is travelling from a non-red list country to a UK airport, they can then travel on to Guernsey and quarantine here, rather than complete their UK quarantine.
A States press conference, where changes to the current local lockdown could be announced, is set to take place at 1pm today.
