Lockdown pancakes – a flipping good idea

LOCKDOWN could not stop people having a flipping good time on Shrove Tuesday.

Frying pans were out across the island to whip up a quick and tasty treat.

Usually schools would get kids in the kitchen to learn cookery in a fun way.

Instead those students who are learning remotely sent photos in to their teachers and were set pancake-related work.

‘We have asked all our children to make pancakes and send photos today as we would have been selling them through the PTFA if the children had been in school,’ said head teacher Mary Robertshaw of Notre Dame du Rosaire Catholic Primary School.

‘The children are also doing lots of pancake activities at home and the essential worker children will be doing a pancake flipping competition during PE – with sports equipment as we can’t make food with them.’

La Houguette Primary School students also sent pictures in, such as Year 5 student Matthew Adkins, who said: ‘Pancakes are really fun to eat; pancakes are a great treat.’

Guernsey with Kids founder Antonia Rainbow made pancakes with her daughters and said: ‘I’m a massive pancake day fan and having pancakes for breakfast this year gave us a much-needed moment of happy.’

Originally they planned to make the mixture together.

‘But in the end I just enjoyed seeing them super excited about being allowed pancakes for breakfast.

‘During lockdown, I feel like we need to take these little wins as they come along.’

Mark Smith had home-grown lemons for sale on his hedge veg box and yesterday lunchtime there were plenty left.

‘They are grown in our greenhouse on a large well established tree that gives a good crop every year.

‘We think it’s about 30 years old – it was here when we moved in, but know it’s been there for a while.

‘We get a couple of hundred a year from it.’

Professional cookery tutor Julie Hyde, from the College of Further Education, showcased her fail-safe pancake recipe and flipping techniques in an online a tutorial video.

Choosing Fairtrade and RSPCA Assured pancake ingredients was recommended by the GSPCA, such as free range eggs, which ensure a better quality of life for both animals and farmers.

Guernsey Cheshire Home hosts an annual fundraiser at Town Church for pancake day.

Lt-Governor Vice Admiral Sir Ian Corder was due to attend this year, but instead the event may be postponed and combined with a summer event.

Guernsey Water reminded islanders to reduce drain blockages by wiping excess oil and grease from pans with kitchen roll before washing up.

Guernsey Dairy uploaded a recipe from local chef James Ferguson of Cooked onto its Facebook page.

The Guernsey Weigh emphasised the origins of the day on social media and said: ‘Shrove Tuesday was traditionally marked as a day to use up those rich ingredients before Lent – a perfect way to reduce food waste.

‘So whilst you’re enjoying your pancakes this Tuesday, perhaps give some thought to how you could use up those ingredients in your cupboards, and fridge, and go that extra mile to reduce your food waste at home.’
