Bailiwick Law Enforcement disclosed the information at the weekend, reminding people that unless they can provide proof of an essential travel permit or critical work authorisation, travel into the island was an offence and they could be fined. A fine of up to £10,000 is in place for those who do arrive without a permit.

A law enforcement spokesman said the Guernsey Border Agency was currently investigating five people for this offence.

‘People are not prevented from travelling to the Bailiwick but can only travel for essential reasons,’ they said.

‘It is the traveller’s responsibility to ensure they have a permit before they travel. If they turn up without a permit they have committed an offence and will be investigated by the Guernsey Border Agency and could face prosecution.

‘These people still have to complete their self-isolation period as per usual.’

An approved travel permit is currently required from the States before leaving the island for each traveller intending to travel back into the Bailiwick.

It is for essential travel only.

For those who are ordinarily resident in the Bailiwick, this means the only travel permitted is for a compassionate purpose, medical treatment, essential business that cannot be undertaken remotely, to attend education or to

return home if they left before 12 January.

For those who are not ordinarily resident in the Bailiwick, the only travel permitted is for a compassionate purpose, to become a

new resident, or as a critical worker.

Law enforcement said the rules were for everyone ‘without exception’. ‘You will be stopped and asked to show your permit when you enter Guernsey and it is your responsibility as the traveller to ensure you have it.

‘Don’t assume that someone else, whether that be your employer or family, will apply for you.

‘If you do arrive without a permit, you will be investigated and may face a fine of up to £10,000.’
