Simon Kent has a son with the condition and the walk came about when Mr Kent decided he wanted to raise funds for the charity.

Jen Bradshaw is registered to look after Mr Kent’s son and she encouraged him to take up walking for fitness.

Originally Mr Kent was going to do the walk solo, but Miss Bradshaw offered to join him.

She had been meant to do a 100km walk in London last year, the Thames Tow Path, but that was cancelled because of the pandemic.

The challenge, called the ‘321 Walk’ to reflect the fact that people with Down Syndrome have a third copy of the 21st chromosome, was due to take place on 20 March.

‘Due to restrictions we have been unable to get enough miles in, so we now hope to do this on 15 May, if the restrictions allow,’ Miss Bradshaw said.

The distance from the Fairy Ring to the St Martin’s Community Centre along the coast road is 21 miles and walking that three times would take the walk to just over 100km.

Both have been training hard and will continue to do so, hoping to complete the challenge in just under 24 hours.
