Warnings issued instead of parking tickets

WARNINGS, rather than parking tickets, were issued for drivers who overstayed their parking limit yesterday.

It was first day since parking restrictions were reintroduced for short-term parking.

During lockdown, parking restrictions were suspended as people were encouraged to stay home.

But from yesterday anyone in a disc zone of two hours or less will have to set their clock and abide by the time restrictions.

‘Tickets will be issued in future, but we are taking a common-sense approach,’ a Bailiwick Law Enforcement spokesperson said.

‘We have been enforcing, but it is about proportional policing.’

The warning notices look similar to parking tickets, but just warn people they would face a fine if caught breaching the rules in future.

It is not known how many warnings were issued yesterday.

The spokesperson did confirm that normal fixed penalty notices were issued to people who were parked on yellow lines.

Other disc zones will start to be enforced when Guernsey moves into stage three. That is expected to happen next Monday, although the date has not yet been confirmed.
