Committee members met for the first time in person since lockdown to tidy up the bed, which it tends year-round, and to get it ready for the spring.

Group chairman Sarah Plumley said a wild flower seed mix was donated to the group by the Commonwealth War Graves Foundation, which will be marking War Graves Week in May.

This runs from 21-28 May and commemorates all those who died in the two world wars.

Mrs Plumley said the seed selection contained 27 varieties and was a mix of annuals and perennials, including the common poppy, corn cockles, salad burnet, cornflowers, yellow rattle and corn marigolds.

‘They should make a lovely display,’ she said.

Usually the floral group creates a Welcome to Guernsey message in flowers, but the wild flowers approach seemed more apt given that there is not much activity at the airport at present.

The group is now working with the Pollinator Project, which will be placing one of its signs on the bed to highlight the use of bee-friendly planting, said Mrs Plumley.

Committee members Jenny Falla, Viv Rees and Jenny Rouillard helped sow the seeds.
