Conclusion imminent for faster broadband plan
WORK by a States committee looking at broadband policy is moving towards a conclusion.
‘We’ve done a huge amount of work. There’s been a large number of meetings with the providers,’ said one of its members, Mark Helyar.
‘I think we’ve reached a point now where we’re starting to think about reaching a conclusion. Obviously, it will have to go to the States for them to consider.’
He added the objective was to accelerate and improve the roll-out of super-fast internet, with experts declaring high-speed broadband was one of the greatest economic enablers.
It also supported education, working from home and work from Guernsey for non-local businesses. ‘It provides lots of opportunity,’ said Deputy Helyar.
Sure Group acting chief executive officer Alistair Beak has also said enhancing the broadband fibre network in Guernsey is under active investigation with talks ongoing with the States of Guernsey about how to best achieve that. Investment – including in faster broadband – is central to the ongoing mission of the telecoms company, he added.
