It offered up 200 empty barrels for islanders to collect, in exchange for a £5 donation to charity.

A dairy spokesperson said that since offering up the barrels last week, 50 had been taken and many more were awaiting collection.

There are now around 30 barrels left.

It was requested that people donated £5 for each barrel, which will go to Guernsey Cheshire Home and Les Bourgs Hospice.

‘These charities have been chosen by the dairy’s production team due to personal links they have with them and that they are also both local charities,’ the spokesperson said.

The barrels had previously contained cleaning fluid.

‘It’s taken about six months to build up this surplus of empty barrels,’ the spokesperson said.

‘Normally the dairy has a stock of around 20, but with the two lockdowns and cancelled events, they have built up and the amounts taken have dropped off.’

The spokesperson said most people had taken a few barrels each.

‘They have multiple uses,’ they said.

‘Fishermen use them, they are used for vegetable growing, water butts, anchoring marquees and for bins at events.’
