The Youth Commission wants people to complete 8,000 metres of movement a day – equivalent to 10,000 footsteps – to support its work.

Participants, who need to sign up, can get around in a variety of ways, running, swimming or cycling the distance or walking 10,000 steps each day to complete the 8,000 metres, and they can mix and match exercises.

The commission is also urging children to become involved, to support other children in the Bailiwick through the initiative.

Youth Commission CEO Charlie Cox said: ‘We are encouraging islanders to show their support for young people by getting active in May.

‘While completing your 8,000 metres a day, you will be motivated to keep going by holding in your mind each young person the Youth Commission supports.’

Throughout 2020, the commission provided services supporting more than 8,000 children and young people within the Bailiwick – hence the 8,000m target – helping them to be the best they can be.

The commission’s work involves providing a range of services, including emotional health and wellbeing support, delivering lessons and assemblies in schools, acting as an advocate for the voices of young people and running weekly youth clubs.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award, and Prince’s Trust are also run from the Youth Commission office at Les Ozouets Campus, along with Home-Start, a proactive home visiting programme for parents under stress with a child under seven. There is also Playscheme, which provides holiday provision for primary school children.

By signing up to the movement event, the commission has said participants will be helping them to keep providing these services.

Registration fees are £10 for an adult, £5 for a child, and £50 for a team of six.

A T-shirt can also be purchased for an additional £10 to help raise as much funds as possible.

All participants will receive a certificate and a Youth Commission pin badge.
