Beach waste survey gets RBC’s backing
GUERNSEY’S first annual report into marine waste can now be drawn up, thanks to a grant from the Royal Bank of Canada .
The Beach Clean Project is an initiative of The Clean Earth Trust.
The trust is one of a collection of over 100 partners from around the world that will be supported this year by RBC’s Tech for Nature programme – a global multi-year commitment to support new ideas, technologies, and partnerships to address our most complex environmental challenges.
The project will log and report on the types of marine waste that is being found across the Bailiwick.
The data gathered over the course of 2021 will form the starting point for the charity’s annual report.
‘Becoming a partner of RBC’s Tech for Nature is a turning point in our operations as a charity and we’re really excited to be joining their international community of organisations tackling environmental issues,’ said Helen Quin, from The Clean Earth Trust.
‘The funding will support long-term, consistent and detailed monitoring of the types of waste impacting our marine habitats and wildlife.
‘We want the report to enable the island to make more insightful decisions on legislation to protect our coastline and its inhabitants, as well as facilitating engagement and conversation with organisations outside of the islands who are working towards similar goals.’
Those interested in taking part in the project are invited to attend the charity’s weekly beach surveys or log their own beach clean data via an online form which will be made available in early May, following the launch of CET’s new website.
