There were five people in the vehicle – the only one involved.

The crash happened just south of the Rue de Goddards junction, near Vistas.

All three emergency services responded at 11.39pm.

‘Sadly, as a result of the collision, one 19-year-old male died shortly after,’ a police spokesman said.

‘His immediate family have been notified, and specialist family liaison officers will be deployed to assist the family at this difficult time.’

His identity will not be released until all family members have been notified.

Two other occupants suffered serious injuries as a result of the collision. However, their injuries were said yesterday not to be life threatening.

The other two were treated for minor injuries.

Vazon Coast Road was closed for more than nine hours while police investigated the cause of the crash.

Specialist collision investigators and vehicle examiners were deployed.

Six Civil Protection volunteers helped with lighting and road closures just before midnight and some were still on scene past 9am to help with cordons.

Three emergency ambulances from St John were dispatched to the incident following reports that there were a number of casualties.

Ambulance crews worked with police and the Guernsey Fire & Rescue Service and an ambulance incident officer was also sent to the scene.

Due to the number of casualties a fourth emergency ambulance was later requested to respond.

‘Ambulance clinicians assessed five people at the incident and all five were taken to the emergency department of the PEH,’ a spokesman for St John said.

Four off-duty ambulance staff were called back to the station to ensure there was enough cover for other medical emergencies while crews dealt with the incident at Vazon.

All ambulance crews stood down from this incident just before 2am.

St John extended its thoughts to those involved and their families.

As the road was closed during the morning rush hour, traffic was backed up through the smaller lanes around Vazon.

It meant Nick Percy, from Vistas, took half an hour longer than normal to get to work, causing him to wonder what had happened.

‘When I arrived at work at about 8.50am police were searching the grass area quite meticulously,’ he said.

‘It was a long night for them, I took them out some bacon rolls about 9.15am – it’s all incredibly sad.’
