Elizabeth College drama teachers Mat Walters and Charlotte Newall are putting on High School Musical and they are looking island-wide for some of the principal players.
‘Since we’ve been here at college we’ve wanted to put plays out into the community,’ said Mat.
‘We did it with Oliver! last year at St James and now we want to do it with High School Musical at Beau Sejour Theatre in January.
‘We want to do something fun and upbeat,’ said Charlotte, who specialises in musical theatre.
‘We want to create a high school on stage and we’re looking for female actors who want to get involved working with us.
‘We’re reaching out to all drama, dance and theatre schools as well as drama clubs and societies and high schools and colleges,’ added Mat. ‘And if they’re already working on a production, we’ll work around them.’
The team is looking for females aged 11 to 18 to play the characters Gabriella Montez, Sharpay Evans and Taylor McKessie.
‘We’re looking outside of college,’ said Mat.
‘This is a community outreach. We will start with the female leads but also people who want to get involved as much as possible. Backstage as well as onstage. The show will feature 60 to 70 students.’
Charlotte said that this is a great opportunity for anyone who is serious about developing their skills.
‘Especially for those who want to go on to do musical theatre. This will be great for their CVs.’
Open auditions will be held on Sunday 23 May at Elizabeth College from 10.30am to 2pm. The production will be shown at the Beau Sejour Theatre on 19, 20 and 21 January 2022.
