Barclay family remain richest people in CI
THE Barclay family have remained the richest people in the Channel Islands, according to the latest Sunday Times Rich List.
The list, which was published yesterday, saw the family assessed at £6bn., placing them 28th on the list of richest British people. That is a drop of £1bn. and 11 places on last year.
The family fortune was started by twins Sir David and Sir Frederick Barclay who generated it through property, retail and media. They bought the lease for Brecqhou in 1993.
Sir David died in January.
Former chairman of client brokerage firm Hargreaves Lansdown Steve Lansdown, who has lived in Guernsey since 2010, came in at position 124, with his estimated fortune of £1.36bn. While that is a rise of £15m. on last year, he has dropped down from last year’s 105th place.
Specsavers founders Dame Mary and Doug Perkins and their family saw their estimated fortune drop by £600m. to £1.2bn. over the last year. That saw a drop on the list from 82nd to 138th. The company had to cut more than 400 jobs last year due to the impact of the Covid pandemic.
