The school is currently on a trip to the island, when warden Steve Sarre found two 37mm German artillery rounds.

It is believed they were remnants of the German target practice undertaken during the Occupation, where artillery was fired towards the island.

Guernsey Police were called in to investigate and set up to safely dispose of the items.

They were detonated on a field in the middle of the island.

Headteacher Linda Paley, who is retiring in September, was allowed to press the button to detonate the ordnances at about 2pm.

The school children lined up at a safe distance to watch. They were very excited and covered their ears.
