Sun shone for finale of 30/30 after riders battled elements

AFTER riding in dreadful weather conditions for most of May, participants in the 30 Rides in 30 Days challenge were able to enjoy some sunshine for the final leg.

Donning their distinctive fuchsia T-shirts for the last time, they set out from organiser Ian Brown’s cycle shop for the traditional short last ride to the North Beach car park where they received their medals for finishing.

Organiser Mr Brown said it had been one of the toughest years for the event, the 14th time that it had taken place.

‘It was windy and cold and sometimes wet as well,’ he said. ‘The riders only had the benefit of this current weather from Wednesday onwards.

‘Everyone really stepped up this year.’

Some of the riders gathered outside Ian Brown's shop.

He was all the more impressed with the efforts made because it was only eight months since the last event, which was held in September after the first lockdown and raised nearly £58,000.

Over the years the ride has raised more than £800,000 for Les Bourgs Hospice and has grown from 32 participants to well over 100.

There has also been a change in the way riders are organised, said Mr Brown, with more groups taking part now.

‘This year we had between 25 and 30 groups and 25 individuals,’ he said.

‘Some people find it easier to spread the fundraising between three or four.’

The first ride raised £44,000 and on average some £60,000 is raised every year.

Mr Brown was hopeful that this year would make between £50,000 and the average, with the total due to be announced at the start of July.
