Ada Climo marks her 100th anniversary today and has become the fourth centenarian currently resident at the Chateau du Village Nursing Home, Fort Road, St Peter Port.

Her close friend, Winifred Collas, achieved the same milestone 12 days ago, while two other residents have already reached the ages of 103 and 102. Staff and residents will celebrate with afternoon tea and Mrs Climo will also mark the occasion with her two daughters.

Mrs Climo, who has been living at the home since 2018, was born in Guernsey and has spent all her life in the island, excluding her evacuation for five years during the Second World War.

She then returned from England to be reunited with her family and went on to marry Richard Climo.

She enjoys playing cards with other residents at the home, a hobby she has continued throughout her life.

When asked what advice she would give to a younger person, she said to ‘carry on with your life as well as you can’.

Mrs Collas celebrated her 100th birthday on 12 June, along with two of her sons, one of whom was visiting from the UK. She, too, celebrated with an afternoon tea with her fellow residents.

She was born in Bournemouth and moved to Guernsey after her parents – both musicians – separated.

She had a career in nursing, having trained in Dorchester and married Len Collas and they had three sons.

She said the secret to her longevity was drinking – 'beer and gin, mainly’.
