This maintenance project has lasted four years, and has seen the whole exterior of the tower repointed in lime.

‘We are very pleased with the progress of the work and glad that, despite the disruptions earlier in the year, this fourth phase could continue,’ said Helen Glencross, head of Heritage Services.

‘The work is vital to the ongoing conservation of the site.’

This last section, on the east side of the fort, was due to start in January but was delayed due to lockdown.

However, a team of stonemasons have now been on site for nearly eight weeks and completion is expected by the start of September.

Fort Grey was part of the chain of coastal defences built to protect Guernsey against French attack but it is one of only three Martello towers built on the island, and the tower and the encircling wall in question date to 1804.

n Fort Grey is still open to the public daily, from 10am to 4pm.
