Festival ‘opportunity to showcase talent’

A FLOOD of local talent will line St Peter Port streets in the first Guernsey Street Festival, launching this Saturday.

Performances from musicians, actors, dancers, puppeteers and storytellers will run daily from 24 July for two weeks.

Eight entertainment zones located throughout Town will host performances from 10am until 3.30pm.

Creative officer Dominique Ogier said the festival will be a vibrant demonstration of creative individuals in the Bailiwick.

‘The festival is so important for the island, one, bringing joy to the streets of St Peter Port, two, supporting artists old and new, and three, encouraging people back into Town, to the shops after a difficult year,’ she said.

‘Guernsey has a lovely community which I’m sure will support the artists and performers, and the festival is a perfect opportunity for young and new talent to come out of the woodwork and test the ground.’

Miss Ogier added that the organising committee’s passion to provide exceptional performance space for local talent originates from their own creative pasts.

That included painting and cheerleading, musical performance and acting.

‘We are providing an important platform, especially with the borders opening, it’s the perfect opportunity to showcase talent.’

Guernsey Street Festival founder Claire Dawson said it was more important than ever to celebrate performers and come together to shop locally.

‘We have been thrilled to see such fantastic talent come forward from all ages and are excited to bring this year’s Guernsey Street Festival entertainment to the streets of St Peter Port as it is also crucial that we increase the footfall in Town and support our local shops.’

A black tie dinner will also be held to celebrate the conclusion of the festival, held at the Duke of Richmond hotel on 6 August.

It will feature more live performances, a four-course meal, a raffle and an awards presentation.

The awards include an under- and over-18 festival performer of the year.

The money raised from the dinner ticket sales and collections in the donation buckets will go towards paying the performers for their contributions to the festival, as well as supporting future events run by Guernsey Street Festival.

The event is also sponsored by the Red Carnation Hotel Collection and Creaseys.
