Marking St Sampson’s Day ‘needs community involvement’

HEIGHTENED interest in St Sampson’s Day has encouraged senior parish constable Paul Le Pelley to consider the possibilities of more island celebrations to mark the day.

Mr Le Pelley worked at St Sampson’s school from 1972-2003 where he regularly discussed the saint with students.

‘It is difficult to celebrate the day because it happens in the summer when the schools are out,’ he said.

‘It would be lovely to encourage the young people to get involved in any celebrations.’

It has been raised whether the day should be marked by a public holiday.

‘Guernsey has a small economy, so bank holidays are harder.

‘They do impact on small businesses, which is why I assume the States are hesitant to implement one,’ said Mr Le Pelley.

‘It definitely needs further consideration. I think it’s a great idea to do more to celebrate.

‘We have church grounds that we could use, perhaps for a fete.’

Mr Le Pelley is willing to discuss ideas for celebrations next year with interested islanders.

‘For it to work we all need to get together and push for it more.’
