Helyar – ‘I do not want to raise taxes’
STATES treasury lead Deputy Mark Helyar, pictured, has reaffirmed he does not want to raise taxes.
‘What I want and believe is that the States should stop wasting money, cut cost and actively seek out ways to do that, not just put up taxes,’ he said yesterday in a post on social media.
He said the report he is bringing to the States in September introducing the concept of a 3% health tax or a goods and services tax, was based on ‘the wrong question’ of how public finances can be balanced if the States keeps spending as at present.
‘The public has every right to be angry about possible tax rises – the more angry in my view the better,’ he said.
‘There is a very long list of things we could be doing to save money, not just public service reform.’
