The themed weeks aimed to offer a new opportunity for families with various activities and a different themed trail exploring the castle and museums taking place every week.

Guernsey Museums’ access and learning manager Jo Dowding has been pleased with the success of the summer holiday event.

‘We had a similar initiative last year and it was so popular that we decided to repeat it with different topics,’ she said.

‘They’ve been going well and we’ve had lots of happy visitors.

‘Some families have been returning for different themes, which is wonderful to see.’

Children and families can still look forward to one more weekend of fun before summer ends, as Guernsey Museums are hosting their annual Big Geekend on 4-5 September.

The two-day event will have an eclectic collection of activities including cosplay, Pokemon and metal detecting.

‘It’s a very varied weekend where people can share their passions,’ said Miss Dowding.

This weekend the castle hosts The Creative Castle on Saturday and Sunday between 10am and 3pm, showcasing a cross-section of the local arts scene, involving live music, interactive displays, dance, film and photography, and the first ever Castle Art Trail.

‘It’s great to be able to join forces with the Guernsey Arts to take full advantage of such a beautiful heritage venue. I hope visitors will enjoy finding new or different parts of the castle they haven’t seen recently – or ever,’ said Miss Dowding.

Jade Kershaw, community arts development co-ordinator at Guernsey Arts, added: ‘We are using one of the underground German bunkers to screen the locally-produced film Occupied. We’re not using a projector screen, just the concrete there already, and it looks really atmospheric.’
