A Guernsey Press survey has revealed that attitudes have changed markedly over the past couple of years.

Before the pandemic our survey showed that 54% of local students definitely planned to attend university, 20% were considering it and almost nobody had written off the idea.

Now those plans have changed, with just 40% committed to student life and 10% saying that university was no longer on their radar.

Students were also asked how Covid had impacted their life and studies at university. Only 12% of students said that they were not worried while two-thirds had concerns about further disruptions. 20% said that their primary concern was over disruptions to extra-curricular activities such as sports and societies, and their ability to complete placements and projects.

A quarter of all respondents, including those not yet in further education, said that Covid had had no impact on their plans. The remaining three-quarters said it had, with most of them saying that the impact had been relatively minor. Just 6% said they had completely changed their plans as a result of the pandemic.
