Pride of Guernsey: Kings Premier Health Club team
THREE people at Kings Premier Health Club have been nominated for the Emergency Hero of the Year award, sponsored by MSG.
Duty manager and personal trainer James Jones, fitness and wellness manager Claire Luvin and off-duty nurse and club member Fillippos Toymazoy all helped to save the life of a racquetball player who collapsed with a cardiac arrest on court, said nominator Roisin Gauson.
‘James immediately responded to the panic alarm. He undertook a visual risk assessment, checked the casualty’s vital signs and commenced CPR.
‘Claire continued the CPR compressions while James prepared the defibrillator. Fillippos held the casualty’s head and provided support.’
James had undergone first aid training but had never dealt with an incident of this magnitude.
‘As a personal trainer, I’ve dealt with putting plasters on cuts but nothing like this.’
Geraldine Chelmick, the partner of Alan Hubert, the player who collapsed, also nominated them.
‘For every 60 seconds that pass, chances of survival drop by 10% without CPR or defibrillation – Alan received both,’ she said.
‘This was continued until the emergency services arrived.’
Alan has little recollection of the incident.
‘He was stabilised at the emergency department in the Princess Elizabeth Hospital before being flown to Southampton hospital that evening.
‘He underwent a quadruple bypass.’
The incident occurred seven months ago and Alan has since made a full recovery.
‘Alan and I will always be grateful to James for his rapid response and to all the people that supported him until the ambulance arrived.’
