Fewer entries than usual but North Show is set to shine

A REDUCED number of entries for this year’s Battle of Flowers is a consequence of uncertainty caused by the pandemic, organisers suspect.

The annual competition is a huge part of the North Show, in which locals compete to produce the most colourful and wacky themed flower floats.

The hand-crafted displays are made from real flowers and paper substitutes and will be on display in Saumarez Park tomorrow afternoon from 2.30pm.

Battle of Flowers controller Emma Sarre said in the past the parade has featured more than 100 entries, but there are only about 60 floats this year.

‘There are usually more entries, but we have enough floats spread across the classes to still have an amazing show,’ she said.

‘I suppose there was a lot of uncertainty at the beginning of the year, and people after having a break last year decided not to take part again, because there is a lot of work that goes into the floats,’ she said.

Mrs Sarre added that she has been organising the Battle of Flowers for more than a decade and felt it was important for the event to continue because it is a major part of Guernsey tradition.

‘The battle is unique and it is just a really lovely family event which no other show has anything like,’ she said.

‘And it all comes together at the end of the show with the illuminated cavalcade and firework display – fantastic.’

She added that she hopes more locals will contribute next year.

Last year’s events were cancelled due to Covid.

The North Show gets under way at the park today.
