Plans for four-metre tall ormer sculpture
A FOUR-metre tall ormer sculpture made of bronze could be installed on the Round Top Store in St Peter Port Harbour.
The planning application has been made by The Guernsey Ormer LBG, which is connected with art lover Chris Humber.
According to the planning application, the proposed sculpture is modelled on the proportions of an ormer shell.
‘The statue itself will measure four metres tall, sat on a plinth of 800mm,’ the application states.
‘The width and depth will be proportionate to the height, but approximately 2.8m by one metre in plan view. The statue itself, and the base is to be cast in bronze. The interior of the shell will be smooth, polished bronze with a reflective surface to replicate the ‘mother of pearl’ texture seen in ormer shells. The exterior of the shell will be a patterned, textured bronze finish.’
The store stands on the north arm of the Crown Pier, alongside the Careening Hard. It is one of the Seafront Enhancement Area sites.
In 2019 it was confirmed that after a collection of ideas about how to improve several under-utilised St Peter Port areas were submitted, Mr Humber was commissioning a sculpture which would be synonymous with the island. However only now have the details been released.
Mr Humber has said he is not revealing further details on the project at this stage.
Ormers are a mollusc and local seafood delicacy, which can only be collected on certain low tides at the start of the year.
The application can be viewed at https://www.gov.gg/liveplanningapplications, with islanders able to make representations on the plan until 15 September.
