Asian hornet team searches for another nest in Vale
ASIAN hornet hunters are on the lookout for a nest in Vale.
Two have been found so far this year – a small one in St Saviour’s and a larger example in the Vale.
But now the experts suspect there is another one to find in the parish.
Over the bank holiday weekend two Asian hornets were spotted hawking at beehives in a private garden at Le Petit Axce in the Vale.
‘We have set out a number of bait stations in the vicinity to attract the workers,’ an Asian Hornet Team spokesman said.
‘This will allow us to visually track the worker hornets back to their nest.’
If anyone spots one it is important not to kill it but to take a photograph and observe its direction of flight because this information is essential in locating the large secondary nest.
The majority of these are found within 500m of where hornets are seen foraging.
Asian hornet nests are typically smaller compared with normal years, because they have been delayed by the cold spring. Small ones have lower numbers of active hornets and therefore they are often overlooked. It is also possible that more hornets are nesting across the other parishes.
Any suspected sightings should be reported to asianhornet@gov.gg or 07839 197082.
