This brings the total number of known active cases of the virus in Alderney up to 23.

Two patients and two staff members have been found to have the illness.

Contact tracing has begun and the hospital is now closed to visitors, the second time in recent months it has taken this step after first doing so in July.

It was at that time that three cases of the virus were found in the island, its first during the pandemic.

End-of-life visits can be arranged and a Health & Social Care spokesperson said that these will be facilitated through a combination of lateral flow testing and wearing personal protective equipment.

All staff and patients are having daily tests. Staff who are critical to the running of the hospital are continuing to work in PPE, and being subject to the necessary virus risk assessments.

‘The situation in the hospital is evolving and will be monitored over the weekend,’ said the spokesperson.

Figures updated by the States yesterday afternoon showed that there were a total of 135 cases of Covid-19 in Guernsey.

There were 17 new cases and, of these, five were symptomatic community cases, two were community cases found during surveillance testing, seven were contacts of confirmed cases and three were travel related.

One person remained in hospital and 16 people have recovered.
