Jobless total down to fewer than 400

The total number of people unemployed in Guernsey fell to 397 at the end of August – a reduction of 20 from the end of July.

The number of job adverts promoted by the Job Centre remained high, at 544.

‘The number of people unemployed has now fallen for six consecutive months, which is a great achievement, especially when we consider the situation as it was at the start of this year following the second lockdown,’ said Employment & Social Security president Peter Roffey.

‘Unemployment is now only 87 above the August 2019 levels, which shows that we are edging ever closer to pre-Covid levels.’

The number of people who were in work and claiming additional financial support was 343 – a fall of 32 from July.

A number of training schemes and placements were run through the Job Centre to support people into employment.

At the end of August, there were 39 people on training schemes such as Work to Benefit, Kickstart and placements with the third sector.

The number of new claims for employment and income-related benefits increased slightly, with 68 new claims made, compared with 66 in July 2021.

These figures are a snapshot taken on the last Saturday in August.
