Husband and wife set to run Sunday’s London Marathon
HUSBAND and wife Gareth and Annie Ashmead will be among the thousands of people running the 26.2 miles in London this Sunday.
Mrs Ashmead was one of the lucky few to get a place in the run, through the ballot, in its 40th anniversary year.
She will be raising money for Citizens Advice Guernsey – where she has been a volunteer since last year and takes over as the charity’s deputy chief executive officer after the mammoth run.
Her husband Gareth had originally planned to go and cheer her along, but he managed to get a charity place so the couple will be running together.
The couple are no strangers to endurance running.
It is Mr Ashmead’s 14th and Mrs Ashmead’s seventh marathon.
This time it is different, though – Mr Ashmead is running purely to support his wife.
‘Gareth is recovering from an injury and will be running the whole way with me to support me and make sure I get across that finish line.
‘I’m really looking forward it although, if I do better than in 2008, it will be a miracle.
‘I felt I was in peak physical condition then but it rained heavily on the day and I was beaten by a very soggy Womble. I can tell you that does very little for your self-esteem.’
