‘It will underpin whole delivery of education’

YOUNG people and learners are being put at the centre of the new Guernsey education strategy, said director of education Nick Hynes.

Mr Hynes reiterated that the intention and purpose of the strategy is to place students at the centre of everything and to ensure it delivers a ‘tangible impact on the lives and outcomes of the community’.

The Education Committee has presented an update on the development of the strategy, as it works with staff from early years through to post-16 education, including head teachers and principals, to plan for the future of education across all settings and age ranges in Guernsey.

Described as ‘an evolving piece of strategic work’, the strategy will set out the medium to long-term vision and ambitions for education. It had been due to be published earlier this year.

It is running alongside the development of post-16 and secondary education, following States decisions in September to close La Mare de Carteret High School and relocate the Sixth Form Centre from Les Varendes to Les Ozouets.

‘The key to the success of the strategy will lie in how all of us who work in education across the Bailiwick can work together to implement the ambition of the strategy for the benefit of children and young people in the system now and in the future,’ said Mr Hynes.

‘To support this we have established a network of aspiring leaders from education settings who are working together to support the development and visibility of the strategy as it moves from intent to implementation.’

Mr Hynes said regular progress updates would be given.

‘That is the key part in all of this. The education strategy is not something that will sit on a shelf, it is the most important workstream within education as it underpins everything Education delivers and sets the standard for how we deliver education both now and in the future,’ he said.
