The GSPCA has said that all pet and animal owners must do what they can to ensure they are safe, well and cared for this weekend, with several firework displays taking place around the island.

There are public displays at St Martin’s AC, Northerners AC, La Houguette School and the Wayfarer Centre in the Vale.

The weekend is an important one to take care of animals.

‘All pet and animal owners must do what they can to ensure they are safe, well and cared for,’ said GSPCA manager Steve Byrne, who advised owners to put an identity tag on their pet in case they escape.

‘Loud bangs and bright lights can often scare animals and we often see an increase in escaped animals during these periods.’

Guernsey Waste recycling officer Tina Norman-Ross said it was not only critical to take safety precautions seriously during firework displays, but also to dispose of used and unused fireworks safely.

‘If not dealt with correctly when disposed of, fireworks can cause harm to staff handling waste and can also cause fires in collection vehicles or at the sites they end up at. No matter whether the fireworks were duds, which did not go off, or whether they misfired, were partially spent or completely spent, it is important to soak them in a bucket of water for at least one hour.’

Fireworks should be left to cool for 30 minutes before being soaked and placed in general household waste for disposal, not the recycling.
