Athletes Cameron Chalmers and Alastair Chalmers, triathlete Joshua Lewis and cyclists Sam Culverwell, Seb Tremlett and Marc Cox are the first raft of selections for the 2022 Games, which run from 28 July-8 August.

How many more and which sportsmen and women will join the six is still to be decided.

The Guernsey Commonwealth Games Council will choose the remainder early next year, the global Covid pandemic having handicapped many in terms of achieving standards and gaining valuable off-island competition experience.

Back in August, GCGA chief David Harry said he was concerned whether Guernsey would be able to fill all 28 spots available to them, but was still hopeful that they could.

In that eventuality Harry fears a lasting reduction in the number of places available to Sarnian sportspeople.

‘It is very possible that if we do not send a full team and we do not compete competently, we could well see our numbers cut by the CGF.’

Other definite starters for Birmingham are the chef de mission choice Angela Stuart and general team managers Karina Jackson and Peter Jory, both of whom make a move from athlete to team management for these Games.

A medical team of three has also been confirmed.

Head of the team’s medical services is Dr Bob Gallagher and he will be supported by physiotherapist Jim Marshall and sports therapist Francesca McLuskey.
