Drivers flouting road closures threatened with court action

MOTORISTS deliberately flouting road closed signs and even moving barriers to get through Rue Poudreuse, St Martin’s, which has been closed following a gas leak, have angered States Traffic and Highway Services this weekend.

The road was closed on Friday and is expected to remain closed until Thursday. The diversion is a long one and motorists attempting short cuts through narrow lanes in the parish have come a cropper when they meet vehicles travelling in the opposite direction.

Police and neighbours are on alert to look out for drivers moving signs and barriers, and Traffic and Highway Services has threatened court action for anyone caught.

‘Neither THS, police or the utilities involved will tolerate tampering of equipment or the risks that are caused by drivers who consider they are some kind of special case and can endanger others by their actions.’

States officials are also concerned about vehicles driving over excavated areas of the road once their drivers have moved the barriers to gain access.

‘The danger you are causing is not just to you and your vehicle and others in the vicinity, the works that have taken place to repair the gas leak mean the gas main is not currently protected by the normal method of backfill and asphalt, the temporary reinstatement is just that, and not designed to be load-bearing,’ it posted on Facebook on Sunday.

‘When drivers choose to remove barriers, and drive over the area, the risk is to all of the utilities that are beneath the road surface.’
