Hundreds explore Lihou for open day
HUNDREDS of people crossed the causeway to Lihou Island on Sunday to enjoy mince pies, mulled wine and bacon rolls, as well as being on the lookout for reindeer.
The annual event was another success for the island, with between 800 and 1,000 people getting involved, according to Lihou warden Steve Sarre.
‘There were a lot a of people who turned up which was really good,’ he said.
‘It went down a treat and everyone fancied something warm.’
With a map to follow and letters to decode, lots of children participated in the reindeer hunt and had the opportunity to explore Lihou.
‘It gives the kids something to do and gives them a chance to stretch their legs and see the island,’ Mr Sarre said.
‘The reindeer hunt was pretty popular this year.’
Despite coinciding with a good tide for ormering, many islanders still took up the opportunity to visit the island and take part in the community event, which Mr Sarre said was beneficial for people, particularly with Covid causing unease for some.
‘It’s not a closed environment so people thought it was quite safe,’ he said.
‘People are looking for an excuse to get out the house and see people.’
All donations went to the Lihou Charitable Trust, which funds the maintenance costs of the island.
