Work this week to repair two storm-damaged piers
STORM-DAMAGED piers at Rousse and Portelet will be repaired this week, as long as the weather holds out.
The upcoming spring tides and decent forecast should give a suitable amount of time for the necessary equipment to be brought in and for the repairs to be completed.
Rousse Pier suffered significant damage during the November storms with several large stones being dislodged. It has been eroding gradually over the years and surface work was completed last year to fill a large hole that had emerged in the concrete.
Rousse Mooring Committee special constable Rodney Norman told the Guernsey Press last week that repairs needed to be made to the pier before they got any worse.
‘Once one stone gets loose, the rest start to go as well. More of the substrate underneath the foundations is being washed out as well,’ he said.
Holes have also appeared in both Portelet piers, and a portion of the surface on one has broken away.
Due to the tidal movements, public access to both piers is limited and so work is scheduled to take place on the wall at the top of the slipway and the slipway surface while the tide drops.
When the work is completed, the public will still be able to access the piers as normal, excluding the direct area where repairs are being done.
Repairs are expected to be finished by the end of the week.
