The search for his replacement has started.

The GHA has grown dramatically under Mr Williams’ leadership, providing more than 800 new homes for local people.

That has included the replacement of the Bouet estate, the neighbouring Warry’s development, refurbishment of Cour du Parc, and a joint project for extra-care housing facilities at La Nouvelle Maraitaine and Le Grand Courtil.

‘During my 17 years with the GHA, some of the most memorable moments have been witnessing how secure, affordable housing has changed people’s quality of life for the better,’ Mr Williams said.

‘I am in no doubt that these successes were made possible thanks to the dedication and hard work of the entire team. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at the GHA and am looking forward to starting a new chapter in my life and spending more time with my family.’

The GHA was formed in 2002 to increase the amount of affordable housing in the island.

It is not part of the States of Guernsey, but is sponsored by Employment & Social Security, as part of the States’ corporate housing programme.

Mr Williams manages the association, which employs more than 20 full and part-time staff to carry out the day-to-day running of the company.

Mr Williams has worked to provide affordable housing since 1983, through a number of UK housing associations and with a private house builder in the UK.

His last role in the UK was as group development director for a housing association with more than 18,000 properties, overseeing a team developing 800 new homes a year in the south-west of England.

As chief executive of the GHA, he was responsible for managing business performance, delivering on its business plan and maintaining a close working relationship with States Housing, ESS and the Policy & Resources Committee.

The GHA board of directors are aiming to have his replacement in post with enough time to ensure an extensive handover period.

GHA chairman Chris Hill said it was grateful for Mr Williams’ hard work.

‘He has made a significant contribution to the provision of both social rented and partial ownership housing,’ he said.

‘Steve’s leadership and collaboration on the board will be greatly missed and I am very grateful for the significant contribution he has made.’

n The chief executive role is now being advertised. The deadline for applications is 28 February.
