Winner of car lottery lucky with only ticket
THE winner of the This Is Epic car lottery, Mellissa Morellec, bought just one ticket, and was not watching when the draw was made live on Facebook on Sunday.
But her reaction still delighted the draw organisers when they called with the good news.
‘Mellissa’s reaction when we called her was brilliant,’ said Philip Smith, founder and director of the This Is Epic charity.
‘It took seven or eight rings for her to answer, but then it was a scream-down-the-phone kind of reaction.’
Ms Morellec, who bought her ticket from a stall during a Christmas shopping evening in St Peter Port, could not believe she had won a new Fiat 500 1.0 Hybrid Sport, which she collected from Le Mont Saint Garage this week.
‘When I answered the phone I was so shocked and it took some time to sink in because I thought it was a joke,’ she said.
She bought a new car just last year, however will be using her lottery prize will be an economical runaround for work and driving her son Lucas, 11, around.
This Is Epic began selling tickets for the car lottery in July and fundraising included a car pull in October.
Directors Mr Smith and Warren Mauger spent a Saturday pulling a Fiat 500 the marathon distance of 26.2 miles back and forth along Vazon Coast Road.
The charity, which has projects based in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, has raised more than £30,000 so far, with more counting to be done.
The projects bring groups of women together to save money, take out loans and start small businesses, and the money raised will fund the 300-400 groups that the charity works with for an entire year.
‘Just £25 for the charity makes such an impact and the cost of one ticket puts one lady through our project and training for an entire year,’ said Mr Smith.
‘We’d like to say a massive thanks to Le Mont Saint Garage for partnering with This Is Epic and a huge thank you to everyone who bought a ticket.’
