Family’s Mittens the kitten is still missing

SEARCH efforts are under way for 10-month-old kitten Mittens, who has been missing for nearly two weeks.

Mittens has four white paws, a white strip down the front of her nose, white patches around her mouth, white all under her tummy and the rest of her is tabby.

She escaped on Friday 4 February from Animal Aid, Forest Road where she was boarding with her brother Smokey, while owner Laura Dragun was in the UK.

There have been several reported sightings of Mittens in Les Pages, and Rue Jehannet, St Martin’s, and lanes around La Villette Hotel, however no one has yet been able to take a photo for Mrs Dragun to confirm.

Mittens could also be trying to find her way back to her home in Quatre Vents Road.

Guernsey Animal Aid is offering a £1,000 reward and has set humane traps.

Mittens is very skittish and so will run if she is approached or hears any cars.

The drive to find Mittens has been huge, with people seeing posts on Facebook and walking the area to help.

‘People are being so so lovely and supportive,’ said Mrs Dragun.

‘People are going out looking for her, but no one really knows where to go because there has not been any sightings now since early Sunday morning and the weather has been horrendous.’

Mrs Dragun has been coming up with inventive ideas to track down Mittens, including walking the lanes with recordings of brother Smokey crying for her, and even taking Smokey out in a buggy to attract Mittens, but both were unsuccessful.

‘There have been a few sightings, but nobody has been able to take a photo of her,’ said Mrs Dragun.

‘There are so many cats that look alike, and there is no single defining feature to separate her from other similar looking cats.

‘It’s not even like looking for a needle in a hay stack, it’s like looking for defect needle in a pile of needles.’

Mittens’ disappearance has been particularly hard on Mrs Dragun’s daughter Thea, 7.

‘It’s her cat who’s gone and she doesn’t know where it is and it’s difficult trying to explain that to seven-year-old and trying not to tell them too much, it’s definitely distressing.’

Mrs Dragun and her family got Mittens as a young kitten in April last year. They say they are distraught, but grateful for everyone who has been so kind and supportive in looking for her.

If anyone thinks they have spotted Mittens, they should not approach her, but take a photo to send to Mrs Dragun who will be able to confirm.

n There is a Facebook page called Mittens Is Missing, and Laura Dragun’s phone number is 07781 157122.

Details can also be sent to the GSPCA or Animal Aid.
