It meant the total amount collected for the Guernsey Society for Cancer Relief in memory of Chris Beale was £12,700.

Mr Beale, who worked for Geomarine, lost his battle with cancer in December, aged 43.

A fellow regular at the Red Lion pub, Teresa Brouard, set up a challenge in which people were asked to walk 43 miles in January. By the end of the month, 24 ‘Red Lionesses’ had raised £10,500 by walking a total of 1,151 miles.

‘I just wanted to finish the challenge with something special,’ she said.

One of the top prizes in the raffle was bed and breakfast for two nights for two people at Stocks Hotel in Sark, while there was also one night B&B for two

at La Fregate Hotel. There were 14 prizes in total.

‘I didn’t know how many people would turn up on the night but both bars were absolutely packed,’ said Ms Brouard.

‘I was just astonished that we raised that amount from a raffle and I just couldn’t believe it.’

She said she was grateful to Red Lion landlord Richard Cann and manager Steve Hill who had wisely suggested that she delay the raffle by one week so they could promote it on social media. She said Guernsey Society for Cancer Relief chairman Peter Atkinson had been delighted with the amount raised.

Mr Atkinson previously told the Guernsey Press that the money collected had made a good start to the charity’s fund- raising year.

Mr Beale was diagnosed with cancer in September 2020. The GSfCR charity helped him as he was unable to work while undergoing treatment both in Guernsey and Southampton.

Having been given the all-clear, he married Laura last May, but the cancer returned and the couple were told that nothing more could be done for him.
