Museum’s late-1970s roof in need of repairs
AFTER four decades, an unusual roof is set to have some much-needed work.
A planning application has been submitted to do work on the roof of Candie Museum.
That includes replacing the roof of the former bandstand, which is home to Cafe Victoria.
An Education, Sport & Culture spokesman said the work was needed.
‘The bandstand is currently in a poor condition with significant degrading of many of the roof sections, rotten timber mullions, corrosion in the metalwork and some water ingress,’ he said. ‘The glazing is also poor and inefficient.
‘The opportunity is therefore being taken to address all these issues as well as making a few minor changes that will help improve the operation and efficiency of the facility.’
It is believed the roof dates to when the museum was redeveloped in 1978.
The project would see the filigree cupola at the top of the roof taken off-site and dry-grit blasted to remove all paint and rust. It would then be decorated with exterior metal paint and refitted.
Existing asbestos cement slates would be removed from the pitches, the area cleaned and a new thermal insulation layer and slates installed.
The existing metal bandstand structure, including decorative columns and brackets, would also be dry-grit blasted and repainted.
The flat roof alongside it would also be removed, timber work carried out and a new membrane fitted.
