We think we will increase tourism, says Premier Inn

MANAGEMENT at Guernsey’s new Premier Inn have said they aim to boost the island’s tourist economy, without taking business from other hotels.

The hotel, which is the first purpose-built one to be opened in the island in more than 30 years, will be receiving its first guests from Wednesday.

The 100-bedroom development is being seen as an important sign of confidence in a sector that has seen bed stock fall in recent years.

Matthew Case, regional operations manager for the Channel Islands, said the company’s well-known brand should increase tourism instead of dividing it.

‘We have a lot of loyal guests that know the business and understand the Premier Inn, and obviously we have a system reach for them, and now we’ll be able to talk to them about Guernsey.

‘So hopefully it’s new tourists and more tourists as opposed to taking a slice of the pie from other people.

‘We don’t see the opportunity here as a fight for the existing guests.

‘We’re aware that we’re a big organisation from the UK, but equally I think we tap into a very different side of the market, and we want to work with other hotels to boost tourism.

‘We have a restaurant, but equally we’re well positioned for the guests who stay here to then go into other local restaurants and bars.’

Premier Inn has more than 800 hotels across the UK and with its large database it is anticipated that the hotel will attract both business and leisure guests.

Mr Case said it was a different offering that would broaden the existing market.

‘There’s a different versatility to what the Premier Inn branding is. We’re a budget hotel chain, we’re not full service like many of the great hotels on Guernsey.

‘Business guests might be a looking for a particular room rate, centralised booking, a known experience etc.

‘Families who want the full service hotel with a swimming pool and things – that’s not us. But equally we’re in a good location in the centre and there’s parking, so families will still be attracted to the known brand.’

Rates for a standard room at the hotel start at £40, although finding that rate during the summer, or when booking close to travel, could be challenging.

Joshua Davies is the new hotel manager. He said that Guernsey was an ideal location.

‘I’ve been so impressed, the beaches are stunning, and the surrounding islands too. Guests might also go to Herm and Sark – we want to benefit the community as a whole.

‘I think guests are going to have such an amazing time, it’s really special and a place to return to.’
