Homeless veterans supported by cadets’ sleep out
GUERNSEY Sea and Royal Marine Cadets from TS Sarnia will be sleeping under the stars next weekend to support homeless veterans in the UK.
The Great Tommy Sleep Out is hosted by the Royal British Legion across the UK to raise awareness and funds for over 6,000 homeless veterans.
Sergeant Matt Hill is hoping between 10 and 20 cadets, aged 10-16 would get involved. A £150 fundraising target has already been reached.
‘The outcome I would like to achieve is raising awareness of this worthy cause and for us reaching our fundraising target or surpassing it,’ said Sgt Hill.
‘The other is to have a great unit bonding event where the cadets can have fun and get to know each other better.’
The Rev. Mark Charmley is allowing the group to use the field behind the St Saviour’s rectory. The event starts at 7pm on Friday and finishes at noon on Saturday.
Older cadets will be sleeping under bivvies and the younger ones in tents.
The long range weather forecast is favourable, however the cadets have the use of the church hall should it worsen.
‘The plan for the night is to use it for some training so the cadets can advance up through the ranks.
‘The cadet syllabus that each section has to work towards has parts that have to be done overnight, for example the Royal Marine Cadet section have to complete a night navigation exercise.
‘We are going to have a fire pit so the cadets can roast marshmallows, and we are trying to find a supplier to donate some breakfast items for the following morning,’ Sgt Hill said.
The money raised will go directly to the Royal British Legion.
