Generosity for Ukraine ‘has exceeded all expectations’

GUERNSEY has exceeded expectations in its outpouring of support for Ukraine, said Overseas Aid & Development Commission president Chris Blin.

‘As an island we have really punched above our weight. The generosity of individuals has surpassed expectations, and it’s not stopping,’ he said.

Three-year visas have been offered to family members of Ukrainian people living in the island and thousands of pounds in donations have already been accepted through the Bailiff’s Disaster Relief Fund, as well as a £500,000 donation from Policy & Resources.

Deputy Blin said that when all the information has been ratified and clarified, a decision will be made by Home Affairs on whether Guernsey will also introduce sponsorship visas – a government scheme allowing islanders to invite refugees into their homes. ‘Guernsey can’t do quite as much as the UK because we are much smaller, but we can still do our part.’

Donation drives have been created by individuals and organisations across the island, and Deputy Blin said many of them will likely seek to register as an official charity as their ventures continue.

‘There is a lot of support across the island, and some people say it is not worth taking things there and it’s better to just send money, but all routes people choose to take are valid. Everything has to be done with great care to make sure that we are working with the right organisations. Some organisations will be looking at getting a charitable status soon.’

More than 1,000 boxes containing items for refugees in Ukraine were collected at an aid drop based in Town, and Deputy Blin was in full support of the drive.

‘The focus of the OADC is to give support, facilitate, give advice and communicate and use connections and links. Vetting is too strong a term, but we make sure we are working with committed volunteers who want to help. These people have one focus in mind and that is to help Ukrainians,’ he said.
