Weightlifters raise more than £3,500 for cancer causes
MORE than £3,500 has been raised by teams weightlifting to raise money for charity.
The Lift4Leukaemia fitness challenge was raising money for former GFC player Jacques Isabelle’s cancer treatment and supporting the Guernsey Society for Cancer Relief.
Storm Force Fitness owner Jon Le Tocq organised the fundraiser after hearing about how expensive treatment would be for Mr Isabelle.
‘I’ve been looking at doing various charity fitness events,’ he said.
‘This was to raise money for him.’
There were 12 eager teams taking part, with pairs challenged to see how much weight they could deadlift in half an hour.
Team members could take turns to lift a weight of their choice – for women this was either 40, 60 or 80kg and for men it was 100, 120 or 140kg.
‘You got to choose how much weight you wanted to lift and you had to lift it as many times off the floor as you could in 30 minutes,’ Mr Le Tocq said.
Four pairs of men and eight pairs of women participated, which Mr Le Tocq was very pleased with, as some people had to withdraw due to Covid.
‘It was really good,’ he said.
‘I was quite pleased we managed to get it going at all.’
On average, 32,117kg was lifted per team within the 30 minutes, and it was estimated that between £3,500 and £4,000 was raised through entrance fees and sponsorship money, although totals are still being calculated.
‘Everyone was aching afterwards,’ Mr Le Tocq added.
Three-quarters of the money raised will go to the Guernsey Society for Cancer Relief and a quarter will go towards Mr Isabelle’s treatment.
Mr Le Tocq hoped to organise more events in future in aid of various charities.
‘There will be loads of different stuff and something for everybody.’
These could include a 5K run, more strength challenges, and a long race along the island’s beaches, similar to the ‘Coastal Chaos’ challenge he has organised in the past.
