More than 30 depictions of the church will be on display, some of which have been loaned

from islanders’ personal collections, and others which were created especially for the exhibition.

‘The round spire of Torteval Church is one of the iconic images of Guernsey,’ said organiser Peter Pannett.

‘Captured in countless photographs, paintings and prints, it has been celebrated from every angle around it and from the sky.’

Over the last two decades, he has collected about 12 images of the church, which sparked his idea for the exhibition.

‘Art is beautiful in itself and it also brings back memories and reminds us of the people and places and occasions we associate with the objects around us,’ he said.

‘It’s impressive to see how artists can depict the same building, Torteval Church, and how the way that they use different perspectives and materials can inspire and create entirely different landscapes and atmospheres.’

The theme of the exhibition has been interpreted in a variety of ways, including photographs, paintings, and even hand-made church mice toys.

‘We have had a good response and it will be a very good exhibition,’ Mr Pannett added.

‘It’s surprising how many different angles people take on the church.’

A photograph by Chris George featuring Torteval Church will be up for silent auction in aid of the Bailiff’s Disaster Relief Fund Ukraine Appeal.

n To tie in with the Feast Day of St Philippe, patron saint of the parish church, on May Day, the celebratory exhibition in Torteval Church will be open from 11am to 5pm on Saturday and Monday, and from noon until 5pm on Sunday.
