Team members took to the bikes at Anytime Fitness to raise money to subsidise their away games, and have so far raised 35% of their £3,000 target so far.

‘Everyone who came down to support it just put in a huge amount of effort which was amazing,’ said Mae Skillen, setter in the island’s volleyball squad.

‘Everyone got quite competitive with themselves, which was really fun.’

After beginning their challenge at 11am and taking turns to swap in and out, the team reached their 720-mile goal by 3am the next day.

When the 24 hours was up, they had racked up just more than 1,075 miles.

‘We are really happy but we are still looking for a sponsor,’ Ms Skillen said.

‘We are hoping this event has shown how willing and hard-working we are.’

Being in a small island, there were not many opportunities to compete, she added, so financially supporting players in away games was important.

‘Obviously during Covid it was very restricted and the leagues were affected – we were so grateful we could finally go away again.

‘We could really play out of our comfort zone.’

She said a sponsor would help the team.

‘It would make a real difference. Everyone has been so generous at the fundraiser.

‘More than anything, it was a really good team-building experience.’
