Permanent reminder planted by aptly-named day centre

COMMEMORATIVE mugs and the planting of a tree at the Guernsey Voluntary Service’s Jubilee Day Centre will serve as permanent reminders of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Clients of the Jubilee and Russels Day Centres each received a mug, sponsored by Butterfield, and have been treated to a range of activities this week.

These has included a tea party and a visit from the U3A choir, said GVS manager Mandy Le Bachelet.

‘They have something on each day and the feedback has been really good.

‘They have really enjoyed the decorations and the clients came in to thank the volunteers.’

A silver birch tree was planted in the garden as a visual reminder of the Jubilee.

‘It’s something worthwhile,’ Mrs Le Bachelet said.

‘With it being the Jubilee Centre, we wanted to have that connection as well and I thought it was really nice to have a permanent reminder.’

Jubilee Day Centre manager Josie Breton said it was important for the clients to have a chance to celebrate the occasion, as not all of them would be attending events over the bank holiday weekend with their families.

‘They might not get to go events on the day so at least they had a good celebration here,’ she said. ‘They just think it’s fantastic.’

Day Centre member Derek Mechem had particularly enjoyed the buffet.

‘The mugs are very nice,’ he added.

‘At the long table there were about 15 of us – we have been well looked after.’
